What is GEO? The search visibility shift, measured

Generative engine optimization is not a new channel to bolt onto SEO — it is the same visibility battle, fought inside answers instead of result pages. Here is how to measure it without fooling yourself.

For twenty years, "visibility" had one shape: a ranked list of links. Then the answer engines arrived, and the unit of visibility quietly changed from a position to a sentence inside a generated answer.

Mentions are not citations

An AI answer that names you has mentioned you. An answer that links to you has cited you. The difference matters commercially: mentions build brand recall; citations send actual traffic and — increasingly — get logged as sources. In our data the two diverge wildly: plenty of brands are mentioned often and cited almost never, usually because their content is quotable but not linkable.

What to measure

AI Share of Voice: your share of brand impressions across answers that mention any tracked brand.

Citation rate per engine: answers that cited you / answers that mentioned the category. This ratio varies up to 46× between engines.

Source leaderboard: which third-party sites the engines cite when they talk about your category — your PR and link target list, computed for you.

Sentiment: a negative citation is worse than none at all.

Track all of it per prompt, over time, against the same competitors you track in classic rankings — because your prospect never separates the two.

The uncomfortable conclusion

If your SEO reporting stops at result pages, your AI visibility is currently happening to you, unmeasured. The brands that will win the answer layer are the ones that instrumented it early — the same way the 2010 winners instrumented rankings.
